Caesium carbonate or cesium carbonate is a white crystalline solid compound. Caesium carbonate has a high solubility in polar solvents such as water, alcohol and DMF. Its solubility is higher in organic solvents compared to other carbonates like potassium and sodium carbonates, although it remains quite insoluble in other organic solvents such as toluene, p-xylene, and chlorobenzene. This compound is used in organic synthesis as a base. It also appears to have applications in energy conversion.

A highly efficient and environmentally-friendly base-mediated transition metal-free direct thiophilic catalytic approach is reported for the synthesis of S-benzhydryl-phosphorothioates by reacting phosphite nucleophiles with diarylmethanethione. A wide variety of thioketones were coupled with different phosphite derivatives to provide the corresponding phosphorothioates in good to excellent yields. The control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations rely on the regio-selective thiophilic addition of a phosphite nucleophile via umpolung protocols.
3. Cesium carbonate mediated C-H functionalization of perhalogenated 12-vertex carborane anions
Sergio O Lovera, Alex L Bagsdasarian, Juchen Guo, Hosea M Nelson, Vincent Lavallo Chem Commun (Camb). 2022 Mar 24;58(25):4060-4062. doi: 10.1039/d2cc00173j.
C-H functionalization of undecahalogenated carborane anions, [HCB11X11-] (X = Cl, Br, I), is performed with Cs2CO3 in acetonitrile. We show that the requisite Cl, Br and I carborane dianions can all be efficiently accessed with Cs2CO3. The utilization of Cs2CO3 eliminates the complications associated with competing E2 elimination reactions providing an efficient, more functional group tolerant, and broader scope than previously reported. The ensuing functionalized cages provide potential synthons for constructing advanced materials and other molecular architectures for various applications.
