MRX-1024 is a proprietary oral formulation of D-methionine with antioxidant and antimucositis activities. D-methionine formulation MRX-1024 may selectively protect the oral mucosa from the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy without compromising antitumor activity. D-methionine may be converted into the L- isomer in vivo, particlualry in instances of L-methionine deprivation, both isomers have antioxidant activity which may be due, in part, to their sulfur moieties and chelating properties. L-methionine, an essential amino acid, also may help to maintain the ratio of reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione in cells undergoing oxidative stress and may provide a source of L-cysteine for glutathione synthesis.

1.Pharmacokinetic analysis and phase 1 study of MRX-1024 in patients treated with radiation therapy with or without cisplatinum for head and neck cancer.
Hamstra DA1, Eisbruch A, Naidu MU, Ramana GV, Sunkara P, Campbell KC, Ross BD, Rehemtulla A. Clin Cancer Res. 2010 May 1;16(9):2666-76. doi: 10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-09-3318. Epub 2010 Apr 13.
PURPOSE: A previous study reported radiation protection from mucosal injury with D-methionine (D-met) in preclinical evaluation; therefore, the pharmacokinetics, safety, and utility of D-met were evaluated clinically.
